A FaerieLantern Story

Two mastiffs are sitting under a Mimosa tree in the back wood mountains of Kentucky.  Dusk is just approaching as they listen to the rush of the creek and feel summers warm breath blow around them and through the pink blossoms of the tree.  It is a favorite evening passing for them to sit under that tree and watch the lightening bugs glitter amongst the Pines.  It is a fulfilling end to a long day of companionships and adventures with their two humans.

“What did you do today?” asks the girl brindle to a tall apricot male beside her.

“My boy and I went fishing.  He let me carry his tackle box all the way to the pond.  That’s an important job.”  He stiffened up proudly while letting out a gruff sigh.

“It is, “ She replied. “ My girl let me carry the flower basket home today.  The smell was wonderfully sweet and I was careful not to lose a one as we trotted down the mountain path. We use them to decorate the table with for super. We had to hurry because we had to be home before the faeries came out.”

“Faeries?”

“Oh, I am sorry my girl calls them little faeries but she means the lightening bugs.”

“My boy calls them lanterns.  He says they hang over the ponds at night so the grow-ups can go night fishing.  One day he says he and I will go night fishing.”

“They are sweet aren’t they, faeries and lanterns.  Dreams and imaginations can change the everyday into extraordinary.  We are lucky to have them aren’t we?”

“Yes, we are, we should rename the lighting bugs than shouldn’t we.  They are little faerielanterns aren’t they?”

“Little dreams and huge imaginations.”
